Standard Quality Irresistable Adams Dry flies are tied with attractive natural materials
Hook: Standard dry, sz 10 - 16
Thread: Black 6/0
Tail: Hackle fibers Black, grizzly or Coq de Leon
Body: Dear hair spun and clipped
Wing: Grizzly hen tips
Hackle: Grizzly and brown or Cree
Head: Thread
1) Begin the fly by placing a debarbed hook into the vice and
start the thread at the rear of the hook. Take a small bunch of
hackle fibers for the tail, measure them so they are about the
hook shank length and tie them in to form the tail. To form the
body you will need to spin a deer hair body about 2/3 length of the
hook shank. After the hair has been spun for the body tie off the
thread and cut it, remove the fly from the vice and carefully trim
the hair until the body is shaped like the one pictured. Place the
fly back into the vice and re-attach the thread in front of the
body.
2) Now take a matched pair of hen hackle points and trim them
so that they are about 1 1/2 times the gape of the hook. Be sure
to even the tips and make sure the feathers curve away from
each other. Tie them in front of the body about midway towards
the hook eye, wrap the thread so that they stand upright and
spit apart to form a “V” shape. Bring the thread back to the
front of the body and tie in the hackle feather(s). Make several
wraps of the hackle behind the wings and then several in front
of them, tie off the feather and trim the excess. Form a small
neat head of thread, whip finish this and trim the thread. The
fly is now complete.
